The Gorean Lifestyle by Bear- November 6 1997

Online Gor is nothing, if not amusing. In my journeys about the various nets, I have seen all sorts of people who would call themselves "Gorean". Some are, some understand a bit what it means to be, and the majority, I feel are clueless. But that aside for the moment, lets take a look at how some of these "communities" present themselves to the outside world in the form of topics for their channels. (NOTE: this is not a *review* of channels, or topics of channels. That form of commentary is under the purview of Excursus here at the Gorean Daily Times and he does a fine job of it. Besides, I do not wish to wake up one morning with my furs smelling of urine.)

First, lets look at a few topics that I think present themselves and the communities in a respectful and flattering light. These are all real topic headers, taken in one day off of the nets:

"Master/slave interaction, Gor style. Check your attitude and politics at the door". Sounds fine to me. They are up front as to what the place is about and that they wish no one to bring in outside arguments. A fine tack for most channels to assume, I think.

"A Gorean safe haven where self exploration is encouraged". Again, this is a fine topic. This lifestyle is *about* self-exploration, courage and conviction. I would think that this is something many channels should aspire to.

A few others that I noticed worthy of comment:

"Gateway to a Gorean realm for the few Goreans that are left..."  I can certainly agree there are few Goreans online, as demonstrated by their behavior, but I think these folks seem to perceive us as a dying breed. We grow. Slowly, but we grow. And while I am at it, if I ran a channel and only let "Goreans" on it, it would be a very small place indeed and I think I would be talking to the same men each day. ;-)

"{Gorean Bondage} Welcome to the Fortress...where the unusual usually happens....." Uhm.... would that not make it usual?

"Welcome to the Gorean Red Brothel, in the City of Cross Fires on Gor.. Here you will find the most seductive of all kajirae, the alusive(sic) red kajirae! Enter and enjoy but behave!" First of all, I must have missed that city in my readings and in my geography lessons in school, but aside from that. What the heck is an "alusive" slave, red or no? Behave? This place will never be reviewed by Excursus, then.

"WELCOME! Rules: No Trolling, No cursing or harrassing, Respect all guests, No private messages w/o obtaining permission in channel First, 18+NKZ! No Children, teens, incest, animal, or rape sex! Slaves must ask to enter the tavern/afk/depart! And wipe your goddmamn feet too!" Sheesh.

"be Gorean...or be Gone" I KNEW I should have copyrighted that phrase months ago. I can hear the cash registers ringing now... ;-)

"Bondage W/a Smile, Gorean Style. Home of the Lost Squadron of Ko-Ro-Ba. Manly Warriors, lusty slaves." Don't most prefer bondage with something more substantial, like rope or something? Heck, if these guys are lost I am not sure I'd trust them playing bondage games with anyone, even if they are a manly bunch of warriors.

"IRC's original Gorean channel. Come and join the original Gorean community..." Oh, if you only knew the stories people tell about THAT place... (some are even true).

"Bondage & Discipline / Switches on GOR are welcome here!!!" Would that not be "switches OFF Gor?" Then again, knowing the "community" as we do... Maybe not.

"Gorean Training Hall and Tavern...All new kajirae and kajirus welcome...we offer training and protection...." A fine combination, lets see how many women we can lure into here by making it BOTH! (They really missed the boat by not also making it a bath/war camp/brothel/slaveship/dock/ice cream parlor as well, I think. Consider "Gorean Fudge Ripple" for a moment.) And "protection"? What is that? Can someone explain that concept to me as it applies to IRC?

"Safe place for the homeless kajira....RESPECT is expected" I would imagine it is expected, but what real Gorean slave wishes to go to a place where she will feel all safe and cuddly and be catered to like the goddess they think she is? Respect? Not hardly.

"Enter and be at peace during your travels. Safe haven for slaves and free people of honor" See the above. A common occurrence online, from what I see.

"Whip them, beat them, the slave is only property to be used at your discretion. Kick that pedastal(sic) out from under her you weak Masters! The Master is everything....the slave is nothing more than property to be used for pleasure. This is Gor! " Then again, we hear from the other side...

And my favorite chuckle this week:

"Gorean Philosophy: Real Masters keep their opinions to themselves, 'Doms' spout off in subbie webzines..." Seems to me there is only one "gorean webzine" that is wholly owned and run by a "slave/subbie" and the little dark elf that wrote the above statement had a long article published there just last week... Ah, one must surmise his words taste sweet, regurgitated, as they are. ;-)

And then, there is, of course:

"October 30th Edition Posted! Over 17,550!! "sold" Gor's longest running publication!..." Hey, a little plug for the editor is never a bad thing...

On a personal note: My thanks to all who messaged me, sent cards and Email concerning my loss. I appreciate them, one and all.
