January 8 1998I am often asked what I feel the differences are between the lifestyle I choose to lead and the actions that others chose to undertake. I am asked, for example: What is the difference between a sub and a gorean slave?
Glad you asked. :0)
A subbie (a generic term we will use here to denote submissive women who have not as yet found their slave bellies, are not required to by their owners, or are simply uninterested in doing so) views her submission as a gift to a man. It is something he must earn, that he must measure up to for if he does not, then she will simply leave him and find another more so. These quotes, from a supposed "Gorean" web page (several, it should be noted, post this page as if it were Gorean), are cuttings from the "Creed of the Dominant" and illustrates perfectly what I mean:
"Above all else he cherishes his submissive, in the knowledge that the gift she gives him is the greatest of all."
"He must also show her that his guidance and tutoring is knowledgeable and deserving of her attention, that this is a man that she can learn from, and trust his direction. "
"He is romantic enough to be protective and chivalrous. When called upon, he will fight for his ladies' honor."
Please not that such things are quite proper for the bdsm/dsms crowds. A subbie is submissive when it is convenient for her to be so, in other words, when *she* decides she should be. If not, she can play at being the brat, leading her "Dom" around by his nose until she allows him to correct or "spank" her in some fashion. A subbie is subservient because it pleases *her*, and when it no longer pleases her to be so, she simply allows it to fall away like a gown.
A Gorean slave girl views her submission not as a gift, but as the natural order of things. Indeed, a gorean slave girl will most often exclaim that once they were *truly* made to touch their slave bellies by a strong man, they had no choice to be anything but what they now are. They cannot go back to being a subbie, if that is what they were previous. It is simply no longer fulfilling. They must take their natural place in the order of things, that is, at a strong mans feet. A Gorean slave girl does not take the measure of a man, to see if he is deserving of her submission, but serves all men to the best of her ability. When she sees the man for whom her belly helplessly burns, she will use her wiles to attract his attention. But, truly, it is she who is measured to see if she is worthy of a mans steel. There are many, many slaves around, and very few Gorean men. The competition is fierce. (For what it is worth, it should be noted that subbies still flock to Gorean channels on IRC, seeking strong men to help them find more to their submission (this has even included the subbie owners of some #bdsm channels, some of whom had early on spoken out quite vociferously against our philosophy. There was much chuckling at this, I assure you ). This influx of new girls leads to much frustration as, I have noted above, there are very few Gorean men, or even men with a Gorean outlook, to see to them. Many of these girls, treated to an emasculated version of "gor" such as the one from whose home page I took the above quotes, go back to where they came, thinking the difference between the two is nothing but flavor. These women, are in my opinion, the true victims of the popularity of the fantasy game that some see Gor as being.)
A Gorean slave can be cherished, but she knows it need not be so and that if she is not pleasing, she will likely be tossed away at her Masters pleasure. A Gorean slave girl does not see her owner as a "Knight in armor riding a white kailla" to her rescue. She knows that due to her station she has no honor, in the Gorean sense, to defend. She knows that she is truly, at the mercy of free persons. (In the twisted realm of online, however, it becomes necessary at times to yank a girl away from those we call HNGs (horny net geeks). This is not a matter of honor. It simply keeps the kids away from the adults in many cases).
Subbies will defend their actions as subbies, thinking, hoping and wishing they were slaves, even when it is pointed out to them that they fool no one, as shown here in a recent exchange I had with one (name shortened and collar changed for it is my understanding that she has been embarrassed enough):
- <k{X}> it's hard to battle the pretenders
- * Bear- shrugs
- <k{X}> there are so many Master
- <Bear-> Why battle? Just do not be one.
- * k{X} isnt... doesnt even blink when she kicks and bans Master
- <Bear-> You kick and ban?
- <k{X}> it just saddens this one is all
- <k{X}> cant help it
- * k{X} does indeed kick and ban
- <Bear-> I think you need a good deal of growth, little one. It is my hope that someday you meet a strong man that can show you the path. Until then, try not to kill yourself again, it does no good. You are still you.
- * k{X} hasnt killed herself
- * k{X} doesnt need to grow
- * k{X} laughs at your words
- <k{X}> night
- <Bear-> Case in point. :)
- <k{X}> GROWL

(Yes indeed, she GROWLED at me. I was then again, as I was previously, unimpressed ;0) Turns out, she had not killed herself on IRC, but one of her subbie friends had. She just came around to the Gorean channels to tell everyone about it. <shrug> However, if the irony of a supposed Gorean slave girl kicking and banning people is lost on you, then you are, most likely, beyond the educational ability of those of us with mere words to spend).
It is obvious then, that there are very real differences, both in manner and philosophy between the subbie and the Gorean slave girl. While there are certainly room enough for both, and the two communities have co-existed for years, it is these differences that manifest in the behavior of a girl, that men may judge other men to see if they are Gorean in their hearts, or just on their computer screens. And that, my friends, is something that those who live the philosophy know all too well.
I wish you well.
